Drawing realistic pastel drawings can be done just with pastel pencils. This is one of my favourite ways of working with pastels because at every single stage I'm refining the skills using the pencils which transfers across to all other portraits. I really enjoy using PanPastels for the base layers and they are wonderful for backgrounds but they are one additional art supply that isn't necessarily required for every project.
