This week is #BritishScienceWeek! The first Astronomer Royal in Britain was appointed in 1675 under Charles II: a mathematician called John Flamsteed. Before an official observatory was established, Flamsteed was given access to the Tower of London, and a salary of £100 a year. In August 1675, Flamsteed laid the foundation stone of the new Royal Observatory, now part of Royal Museums Greenwich.
